Dimensional Metrology
From microns to meters, built on precision
We measure with accuracy at every scale, ensuring flawless integration
Ensuring precision, traceability, and confidence in every CERN component!
Our Metrology Laboratory provides dimensional control, calibration, and metrological expertise to guarantee the geometrical integrity and conformity of accelerator and detector components throughout their lifecycle.
Operating within CERN’s MME Group, our lab supports the design, manufacturing, and quality-assurance activities of the Organization’s most demanding projects.
Our Competencies

Metrology Expertise
Delivering precision and traceability
The application of ISO GPS standards ensures consistent and unambiguous interpretation of geometrical tolerances, while state-of-the-art metrology techniques provide high-accuracy, repeatable measurements. Our capabilities extend to both remote and in-situ inspection, even in harsh or radiation-intensive environments. From early design validation through to final inspection, we guarantee dimensional conformity at every stage of the process.

Capabilities
Systems and specialized solutions.
Contact measurements include 3D coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), portable devices, and tactile probes, while non-contact methods use laser interferometers, laser scanners, WLI/CSI, and profile projectors. Environmental control ensures the stability needed for micrometre-level precision, with our most temperature-stable laboratory maintaining gradients within 0.1 K/m, 0.2 K/hour, and 9.4 K/day. We develop dedicated solutions for CERN applications, integrate metrology data into digital-twin workflows, and adapt strategies to demanding environments.

Quality Assurance
Embedding quality
An integrated QA system aligned with CERN’s global quality-management framework ensures consistency across all activities. Following the principle of Built-in Quality, every MME task begins with a strong focus on quality assurance. This includes calibration and verification of instruments across CERN’s facilities, uncertainty evaluation, and full traceability documentation in line with international standards. Ongoing monitoring and well-established best-practice procedures drive continuous improvement throughout the process.
